Overview
The LSFI ( Learning Science for Innovators) program initiated by CMU Africa and Mastercard Foundation aims to equip African EdTech entrepreneurs with applicable learning science knowledge but the courses are currently facing a low learner engagement rate. Our Capstone team helped boost learner engagement through a series of improvements including content chunking, active learning, clear progress tracking, incorporation of badge system and learning path personalization.

Background
The MasterCard Foundation, partnered with Carnegie Mellon University Africa, offers a learning science certificate program to support EdTech entrepreneurs across Africa
8 accelerator programs, 120+ cohorts from over 10 countries across Africa are participating in this program
Problem
However, the program now faces low course completion rate and poor learner engagement
20%
course completion rate
1 in10
cohort earned a certificate
1/2
learners did not complete the first module
Challenge
How might we increase learner engagement so that more EdTech startups can benefit from the certificate program?
Our Solutions
A more compact course structure x personalized learner dashboard
Learning experience tailored for busy, goal-driven working professionals.
Course Structure Redesign
Shorter Learning Units
For busy learners with fragmented learning time
Question-guided Learning
Actively learn by answering questions rather than reading
Video as Feedback
Immediate feedback in a more engaging format
A/B Testing Result
60%
Learning time reduction with the same learning gain ( post test - pretest score)
15%
More learners think the course is engaging in the experimental group
Learner Dashboard
Progress Tracking
For busy learners with fragmented learning time
Personalized Learning Path
Actively learn by answering questions rather than reading
Badge System
Immediate feedback in a more engaging format

Clear Progress Tracking

Before Learners only receive links to courses through email, it is hard to keep track of their progress
After The dashboard displays learning progress, motivating learners to move towards the certificate

Personalized Learning Path

Before All learners need to follow the same course sequence no matter their role or interest area
After AI recommendation based on learner input to match the most relevant courses

Sharable micro-credential badges

Before Learners need to complete full course sequences to receive certification
After Use badges as micro-credentials and incremental motivation
